Double Standard, 2008

Fallen Fruit, “Double Standard,” 30:00 video, 2008.

A guided Neighborhood Fruit Forage through a tour of Fallen Fruit’s home neighborhood in Los Angeles. The two channels (from the perspective of the two cameras) are overlaid with a text block of comments on a PBS video of the same tour which was broadcast and posted on YouTube. The comments create an alternative, cruelly critical narrative to the events documented in the raw footage, with sarcastic comments mixed in with a few acute observations. In the play between action and commentary, “Double Standard” examines two kinds of publics: the traditional one, people assembled together on a street, and the new, anonymous public of the internet. The slippery space between these two narratives probes at the question of authenticity as well as casting a new look at the issues of public and private space.
