United Fruit, multi-media installation, 2008
A multi-part solo exhibition focused on the banana, the most popular fruit in the world. One set of nine large photographs of a banana plantation off the Carribean coast was contrasted with nine portraits of workers on the plantation. In a second gallery, two hypnotic videos play on facing sides of the room, one of the workers processing the bananas for shipment, and the other of American teenagers eating bananas in a continual loop. A collection of video interviews with Colombian historians, activists and citizens adds a historical, personal and politicized view. Created during a residency at Lugar a Dudas in Cali, Colombia.
